History

The Finsterwalde airfield from 1915 to 1994 was used as a military airfield. In 1925, the airfield was closed, flights of military aircraft were again resumed only in 1937.

During World War II, the airfield was the home base of the 1st Hindenburg bomber squadron on Junkers Ju 52 aircraft . In February 1945, units of the Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 (2nd squadron of direct support for Immelman troops, SG2 Immelman) were based at the airport, covering Berlin from the advancing Soviet troops. After hijacking the airfield, the squadron flew to another airfield and surrendered in 1945 to the Americans in Czechoslovakia, flying their planes to the American airfield after signing the surrender. At the same time, ground personnel moving towards the Americans on the ground were attacked and destroyed by Czech partisans.

Since 1945, the USSR Air Force was based at the airport. Since the 1970s, the airfield has been used by civil aviation. Since 1993, the air units of the Russian Air Force were deployed to Russia. In 2009, the airport was closed.

Current status

In 2009, flights were completely stopped at the airport [7] .

In 2011, most of the airfield was built up with solar panels to generate electrical energy. The total building area was 74 hectares, which made it possible to reach a production capacity of 40 MW. This constructed β€œsolar park” is the largest solar power station in Germany [8] .
