History

At the origins of the festival were Innokenty and Julia Volkomorovs. The format of the festival was chosen like the main European open-airs, such as the Finnish Pori Jazz or the Dutch North Sea .

The festival appeared in 2003 under the name "International Peter and Paul Jazz Festival", later it was replaced by "Jazz Q". In 2007, after a short break, the festival was resumed under the name of the current name Petrojaz and with a new concept, one of the main tasks of which is to make jazz accessible to everyone.

The first 11 years the festival was held in the Peter and Paul Fortress , and since 2015 it moved to one of the central squares of St. Petersburg - Ostrovsky Square to the territory near the Catherine Garden.

In its activities, the festival relied on revenue from ticket sales and sponsor support. Since 2014, Petrojaz has been held with the support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg, which made it possible to make entrance to concerts free.

Initially, mainly foreign artists were invited to the festival. Now "Petrojaz" perform jazzmen from Russia, Europe and the United States.

In 2015, the festival was held outside of Russia. It took place in the capital of Estonia. In the center of Tallinn on Tower Square , more than 40 musicians from St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Riga performed. The festival was held with the support of the Tallinn Central District Administration [4] [5] . In the future, it is planned to hold a festival in other Baltic countries and develop the festival at a European level [6] .

Since 2016, the Petrojaz Festival has been an official member of the Estonian Jazz Union [6] .

Since 2015, the Voice of Petrojaz contest has been held at the festival, which includes two nominations - Voice of Petrodzhaz. Vocalists ”and“ Voice of Petrodzhaz. Ensembles. " Contestants are evaluated by an expert jury led by Vladimir Fejertag [5] .

In addition to concerts, the festival hosts master classes in jazz vocals and playing jazz instruments, dance master classes, as well as other entertainment events. Petrojaz collaborates with universities in St. Petersburg and provides internships for students. The festival is engaged in charity [6] .

Attendance of the festival is from 20,000 spectators annually.
