Before the start of the season, Sir Matt Busby left the post of head coach, which he held for 24 years. Wilf McGuinness was appointed in his place. Under his leadership, United finished the season in 8th place in the championship, and also made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the Football League Cup.
The best scorer of the team in the season was George Best with 15 goals in the championship and 23 goals in all tournaments.
