The NATO-Ukraine Commission is a NATO commission responsible for developing relations between NATO and Ukraine , and managing cooperation between the parties. Established in 1997 .

Creation

Formed in accordance with the Charter on a special partnership of NATO - Ukraine, signed by the heads of state and government of Ukraine and NATO countries on July 9, 1997 in Madrid [1] .

The stated purpose of creating a commission is to apply the provisions of the Charter, to assess the development of relations between NATO and Ukraine, to analyze and plan joint activities, as well as recommendations for improving or further developing cooperation [1] .

Members

All NATO member countries and Ukraine are represented in the Commission. The commission meets regularly at the level of ambassadors and military representatives, as well as periodic meetings at the level of foreign ministers, defense ministers and chiefs of staff, and sometimes summits [1] .

Assignment

The commission is a forum for consultations between NATO member countries and Ukraine on security issues of common interest: the situation in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Iraq, the fight against terrorism, frozen conflicts, and other regional issues [1] .

In December 2008, the foreign ministers of NATO member countries decided to further strengthen the work of the Commission by developing an Annual National Program. The program will replace the annual target plans on the basis of which NATO-Ukraine cooperation took place since the approval of the NATO-Ukraine Action Plan in 2002 [1] .

Within the Commission, joint working groups were established to deepen cooperation in such areas as defense and security reform, armaments, economic security, scientific research and environmental protection [1] .

The Commission monitors cooperation activities in the framework of Ukraine’s participation in the Partnership for Peace program, as well as in the military sphere within the framework of the Military Committee and in accordance with the Annual Work Plans of Ukraine [1] .
