Born in 1795 in Bayonne in a noble noble family. He studied law in Paris, but gave up his career as a lawyer and in 1822 entered the Jesuit seminary and the novitiate of this order, studied philosophy and theology. On July 25, 1828, he was ordained a priest. He served in a number of cities in France until 1837, when, after leaving the famous preacher from the Dominican order, Henri de Lacorder, he was offered an honorary post as a preacher in Notre Dame Cathedral [1] . In 1838, Ravignan made solemn vows in the Society of Jesus. He served as a preacher in Notre Dame de Paris until 1846, and thanks to his eloquence, he gained great popularity. “His sermons, brilliant in dialectical terms, acted more on the mind than on the feeling” [2] .
In 1846, due to poor health, he resigned as a preacher; in 1850-1851, he returned for some time to sermons at Notre Dame Cathedral, but then completely abandoned this activity. He delivered sermons and oratory in defense of the Jesuit Order in other cities of France, as well as in Rome and London. He was a consistent opponent of the policy of Louis Philippe aimed at secularizing the Jesuit Order in France [1] .
Ravignan was highly respected among the Russian Catholics of Paris, he was the spiritual patron of the Catholic circle at the salon of Sofia Svechina . Ravignan was a witness during the transition to Catholicism of Prince I. S. Gagarin and Count G. P. Shuvalov [1] .
The author of two works - the first, On the Existence and Structure of the Order of the Jesuits , was of an apologetic nature. Ravignan released it in 1844 in response to attacks on Jesuit liberal critics, in the first place, the work was a response to the fierce anti-Jesuit paplet “Des Jésuites” by J. Michelet and E. Kine . The second work was the historical study "Clement XIII and Clement XIV" (1854), in which Ravignan compared the policies of these two Roman popes with respect to the Jesuit order [3] .
