Michael Thomas Flynn ( born December 1958 , Middletown , Rhode Island ) is a retired US Army Lieutenant General , 18th Director of the Department of Defense Intelligence Directorate (2012-2014), former commander of the Joint Functional Command intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance component; and former member of the Military Intelligence Council. Advisor to the US President on National Security (January 20 - February 13, 2017).

Biography
In 1981, he graduated from Rhode Island University with a bachelor of science degree, after which he studied at the Reserve Officers Training Corps . He then served in the 82nd Airborne Division (XVIIIth Airborne Corps) and the United States Special Operations Joint Command . He also served in the 25th Infantry Division , Joint Army Combat Training Center, and US Army Intelligence Center.
Flynn holds a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University, a Master of Martial Arts and Science from the US Army Command and Staff College , a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategy at the Naval College, and an Honorary Doctor from the Institute for World Politics in Washington , DC Colombia.
He served as Assistant Chief of Staff, G2, XVIII Airborne Corps ( Fort Bragg , North Carolina ) from June 2001 and Director of Intelligence, Joint Task Force 180 in Afghanistan until July 2002. Flynn commanded the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade from June 2002 to June 2004.
Flynn was director of intelligence for the Joint Command of Special Operations from July 2004 to June 2007, and served in Afghanistan ( Operation Enduring Freedom ) and Iraq . He served as Director of Intelligence at the Central Command from June 2007 to July 2008, worked as Director of Intelligence at the General Staff from July 2008 to June 2009, and Director of Intelligence at the International Security Assistance Force from June 2009 to October 2010.
In September 2011, Flynn was promoted to lieutenant general and transferred to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Although he was previously a Democrat, from February 2016 he worked as an adviser to the presidential campaign of Donald Trump [1] .
On December 10, 2015 Flynn was spotted by journalists at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Russia Today , where he sat next to Vladimir Putin [2] [3] . Flynn in this connection gave an interview to the Washington Post and said that he had not talked about anything with Putin, except for a brief presentation. In the same interview, the general admitted that he received a cash reward from RT for consultations [4] [5] . According to the BBC and other media, Michael Flynn in the administration of Donald trump is the link in the conclusion of a political deal with Vladimir Putin in Syria, as he had previously publicly announced through RT about the need for such a deal [6] [7] .
On November 18, 2016, President-elect Donald Trump proposed Michael Flynn the post of National Security Advisor [8] . He was appointed to the post on January 20, 2017, but on February 13 he was forced to resign, after a scandal erupted due to information that appeared on the discussion of anti-Russian sanctions with the Russian ambassador to the United States S. Kislyak . The resignation was accepted by President Trump [9]
