Game career
Amateur
Stoa played hockey for his school (Bloomington Kennedy High School), where in the 2002–2003 season he earned the status of one of the best players in the conference [1] . As a result, he was selected to participate in the US National Preparatory Program , in which he played for junior teams from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 , he participated in the World Hockey Championship among junior teams .
The Stoa was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft at number 34 by the Colorado Avalanche team.
Stoa continued his career at the University of Minnesota . In the first season, Stoa earned 25 points, losing only to Phil Kessel .
During the second season, Stoa got to the 2007 World Youth Championship , where he took 3rd place with the US team.
He almost completely missed the third season in college due to a severe knee injury [2] . After returning, he became a captain and scored 46 points in 36 games and was recognized as the team’s most valuable player [3] . He also got into the symbolic team of the conference, according to the association of American coaches [4] .
On March 27, 2009, Stoa signed a two-year contract with Colorado Avalanche. [5]
Professional career
After the pre-season training camp, Stoa was sent to the American Hockey League , where he played for the Lake Erie Monsters farm club [6] . He scored the first goal on a professional level on October 13, 2009 [7] .
The debut for Colorado took place on December 13, 2009 in a game against Calgary Flames [8] . On January 22, 2010, Stoa scored the first NHL scoring goal by participating in a goal attack on the Nashville Predators goal [9] . Injury prevented Stoa from continuing to perform in the NHL [10] .
Stoa finished the season in the AHL, becoming the leader in abandoned goals among beginners (23 goals) [11] .
On July 8, 2011, Stoa extended the contract with Colorado for another year.
On July 7, 2012, Stoa signed a 1-year contract with Washington Capitals [12] . Nevertheless, he spent the season again in the AHL, where he played for the Hershey Bears farm club, gaining 19 points in 46 games.
On April 15, 2013, Stoa extended his contract with Washington for 1 year [13] . He also spent the season in the AHL, where he scored 40 points in 67 games. He spent the second half of the season in the NHL, where he returned after two years of absence. However, for 3 games he did not score a single point.
Stoa decided to pursue a career outside of North America and on July 15, 2014, Stoa signed a contract with the KHL club Metallurg Novokuznetsk [14] . In his debut season, Stoa scored 30 points in 60 games. On February 27, 2015, he extended the contract for another year [15] .
In the second season in the NHL, Stoa played 33 games for Metallurg, in which he scored 15 goals, after which he was sold to Neftekhimik [16] .
On May 10, 2016, Ryan signed a contract with Moscow Spartak [17] . In the first game, Stoa scored the first goal for the team, which also became the first goal of Spartak in the season, but did not save from defeat [18] . Having scored 30 points in 57 matches of the 2017/2018 season, in May 2018, Stoa moved to the Chelyabinsk Tractor [19] .
On July 15, 2019, he signed a one-year contract with the Örebro club from Sweden.
U.S. National Career
Stoa took part in the 2005 Junior World Championship, where he scored 3 points for assists in 6 games, becoming the winner of the tournament.
In 2007, Stoa played at the Youth World Championships, where he scored 2 points in 7 games, earning bronze medals in the United States.
In 2018, he took part in five matches at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in South Korean Pyeongchang [19] .
