Biography

Ikrim was a slave to Ibn Abbas, whom he came to at the time when Ibn Abbas was governor of Basra. Therefore, he was often called Mawlah Ibn Abbas. Freed by the son of Ibn Abbas, Ali. He traveled a lot, and among the places he visited are called Hijaz , Egypt , Syria , Yemen , Iraq ( Kufa , Basra ), Iran ( Nishapur , Isfahan ), Khorasan ( Samarkand , Merv ). Sometimes he traveled in the company of governors, which may indicate that he did not go to promote Harijism , although of course he followed his doctrine. It was unlikely that he traveled to Maghrib, was responsible for spreading the Kharijite teachings in Ifrika , and also that he died in Kairavan. They say that he was of Berber origin [1] .

Moreover, on the same day when Ikrim died, Kasayyir Gazz died; a joint funeral prayer was held for both of them. It is reported that he adhered to Kharijit views and was sought by one of the governors of Medina and, therefore, he was supposed to lead an underground lifestyle, but the uncertainty of this information indicates its unreliability. According to the oldest sources, he transmitted traditions from Ibn Abbas, Aisha and a few other associates of the Prophet Muhammad; later, the number of transmitters transmitting Hadith from him greatly increased [2] .

Ibn Sad pays tribute to his knowledge and at the same time is critical of his beliefs. Four of the six authors of the classical collections of hadith ( al-Bukhari , Muslim , Abu Daud and al-Nasai ) cited the transmission of hadith from him. Early traditionalists received messages from him, and only a few later critics declared him unreliable or deceitful due to his Kharijit views. Eventually, Ibn Hajar al-Ascalani and subsequent theologians again accepted him [2] .

Died in Medina at 723 at the age of 80 years [2] .
