History
The ducal title was granted on October 11, 1865 by the Queen of Spain Isabella II Antonio Maria Marcile de Teruel-Montezuma and Navarro, the 14th earl of Montezuma de Tultengo and the 11th Marquis de Tenebron.
The original title of Count de Montezuma was granted by King Philip IV on November 13, 1627 to Pedro Tesiphon Moktesume de la Cueva (1627-1639), to the 1st Viscount Ilucan, Señora Tula and Peza, Cavalier of the Order of Santiago. He was a descendant of Tlakauepantsin (in baptism - Don Pedro), one of the sons of Emperor Montezuma II. In 1639, the King of Spain, Charles II , granted the second holder of this title, Diego Luis de Montezuma and Porres, 2nd Earl of Montezuma (1639–1680), a prefix to the title “de Tultingo”. The city of Tullengo was part of the Mexican state of Hidalgo , which was a legacy of Montezuma’s son, Pedro. All subsequent title holders from 1635 to 1865 were called "the counts of Montezuma de Tultengo".
The current title holder is Juan José Marcilla de Teruel-Montezuma and Valcarcel, 6th Duke of Montezuma de Tultengo and 16th Marquis de Tenebron (since 2014 ).
