Floods in Europe (2016)

Floods in Europe 2016 - rising water levels in late May and early June 2016 as a result of prolonged heavy rains in Europe, mainly Germany and France, but also in Austria, Belgium, Romania, Moldova, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Among other things, the German lands of Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia were affected. In the rivers Neckar, Danube, Rhine, Seine and their tributaries, the level rose sharply, causing flooding along the banks. Killed at least 20 people [2] .

Floods

France

On June 2, the penultimate - “orange” - level of meteorological alert was announced in Paris and its neighboring departments of the capital region of Ile-de-France [6] .

In the northern regions of France, more than five thousand people were evacuated. Dozens of settlements literally went under water, 5.5 thousand people were evacuated. More than 20 thousand homes across the country were left without electricity. Interrupted train traffic between Paris, Versailles, Medon and Luxembourg, closed Paris metro. The Louvre exhibits located on the lower floors of the museum were transferred to the upper floors, and the museum itself was closed for some time [7] .

Damage

The total damage, according to insurers, exceeded one and a half billion euros [1] . In particular, the damage caused to France was estimated at more than a billion euros [8] , the "General Union of German Insurers" estimated the damage in the south-west of Germany at about 450 million euros [6] .

Possible Reason

Meteorologist Nigel Arnell of the University of Reading (UK) hypothesized the cause of the flood: this is a natural phenomenon known in meteorology as the omega block: the formation of air currents in the atmosphere along a path resembling the Greek letter omega . This phenomenon contributes to the emergence of a low pressure region over regions, where subsequently precipitation levels sharply increase [9] [10] .
