History

The first settlements appeared on the site of the current city back in the Iron Age . At the turn of our era, the Romans owned these lands. In the 7th century, a monastery was founded in Tainmouth. In it in the early Middle Ages three kings were buried: Osvin , king of Deira (651), Osred II , king of Northumbria (792) and Malcolm III , king of Scotland (1093). In commemoration of this, three crowns adorn the coat of arms of the North Tyneside area. In 800, the monastery was destroyed by the Danes, again suffered in 875, but by 1083 it was finally restored. In the monastery in the XIII-XIV centuries lived the queens of England, the wife of Edward I and Edward II , at a time when their husbands fought in Scotland. After losing at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, Edward II escaped by sea on a ship from Tynmouth to southern England. Under King Edward III , Tynmouth Castle became one of the strongest fortresses in northern England.

Attractions

The name of the city comes from the Tyne River, which flows here into the North Sea. Tynmouth is known for its sandy beaches and is a resort destination, especially popular on weekends with residents of neighboring major cities - Newcastle and Gateshead. In the summertime, various music festivals are held here, gathering many spectators (for example, the Mouth of the Tyne Festival ).

Of the local architectural sights, the ruins of a medieval castle and monastery, as well as a monument to the British admiral of the 18th century, Baron Cuthbert Collingwood, should be noted.
