In the championship, "United" finished in 4th place. In the Cup Winners' Cup, the team reached the semifinals, in which they lost to Juventus . One of the most spectacular matches of the season was the return quarter-finals of the Cup Winners Cup against Barcelona , which included Diego Maradona . Losing in the first game with a score of 0: 2, United won in the return match at Old Trafford with a score of 3: 0 thanks to the “double” of Brian Robson and the goal of Frank Stapleton .

This season, in the main part of the “United” debuted the young Welsh striker Mark Hughes , who scored 4 goals in the championship. Frank Stapleton was the top scorer with 19 goals in all tournaments.

At the end of the season, the club left Ray Wilkins , who joined Milan . Team captain Brian Robson rejected the offer from Juventus and remained at the club.

Also at the end of the season, wingers Gordon Strakan and Jesper Olsen went to the club.
