Biography
The third child in the family of George Thomas Nicholson and Ann Elizabeth Nicholson, daughter of a member of parliament from Norwich William Smith [2] .
After graduating from Mallison's school in Hove, he entered the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. In 1846, Nicholson received an officer rank and joined the Royal Engineering Corps [2] . In 1855 he was sent to the Crimean War , where he participated in the siege of Sevastopol [2] . In 1857, he was relocated to Calcutta to suppress the Sipai Rebellion [2] . Participated in the capture of Lucknow [3] .
In 1861 he headed the Royal Engineers in the London District, and then in 1868 in Gibraltar . In the same year, he was promoted to assistant adjutant general of the Royal Engineers in Ireland [2] .
In 1878 he was appointed lieutenant governor of New Jersey, in 1886 - inspector general of fortifications [2] . The rank of general was awarded in 1888 [4] . In 1891 he became governor of Gibraltar , while in this position he died in 1893 from a fever [2] . He was buried there in the garrison cemetery [5] .
