Chambel, Chalet

Chalet Chalet (August 27, 1916 - January 12, 2014) - Turkish archaeologist and fencer. The first Muslim woman to participate in the Olympics [2] .

Biography

Chalet Chambel was born on August 27, 1916 in Berlin. Her father Hassan Cemil Bay is a military attache, a friend of Mustafa Ataturk . Chambel's mother, Remzie Hanym, was the daughter of Ibrahim Hakky Pasha , the former Great Vizier, who at that time held the post of Ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to Germany [3] .

Chalet Chalet studied at Arnavutkoy American School for Girls (later this school was called Robert College ). While studying at school, she began to engage in fencing. In 1933-39, she studied archeology at the University of Paris . Since 1940, she worked as an assistant at Istanbul University . In 1944 she received a doctorate. For two years she worked as a visiting professor at the University of Saarland in Germany. In 1984, she received the post of Emerit [4] .

Acted at the 1936 Olympics for Turkey in foil fencing [5] . It is considered the first Muslim to participate in the Olympic Games [6] .

After the end of World War II, she studied with the German architect Helmut Bossert , who taught archeology at Istanbul University. Together they carried out excavations in Karatep , where there was a settlement of the twelfth century BC. e., Bahadyr Alkim also took part in the excavations [3] .

Chalet Chalet advocated the preservation of the cultural heritage of Turkey. She opposed the construction of a dam on the Ceyhan River, as this could lead to flooding of territories valuable to archeology. Chambell managed to convince the authorities to lower the water level to prevent flooding [7] .

In 2004, Chambel was awarded the Dutch Prince Klaus Prize [3] .

She died on January 12, 2014 in Istanbul [8] .

Personal life

Shortly after returning from the Olympics, Chambel met with journalist and architect Nail Chakyrkhan [3] . Chambel and Chakyrkhan were married for about seventy years, until the death of Nail Chakyrkhan.
