Biography
He spent his childhood in France, then in 1885-1898 he lived in Georgia . After graduating from a real school in Tiflis , he went to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1899-1902), later studied at the art school of Princess M.K. Tenisheva and at the “Workshop for Students” by the engraver, draftsman, etcher L. E. Dmitriev-Kavkazsky (1907) in St. Petersburg .
In 1907 in St. Petersburg he married the artist Lydia Arionesco (1880-1923), who was born in Bessarabia. Before the October Revolution, with his wife, he repeatedly came to her homeland.
He gravitated to the circle of St. Petersburg innovative artists. At the beginning of the 19th century, he was a member of the art associations “Triangle - an art-psychological group”, organized by N. I. Kulbin , and “ Youth Union ”, the first St. Petersburg society of experimental artists and innovators, and the first metropolitan creative association of the Russian avant-garde .
Participant of exhibitions in St. Petersburg - “Blanc et noir” (1903), Autumn (1906, 1907), “Impressionists” (1909 and Vilna, 1910), “Triangle - Wreath - Stefanos” (1910), the Union of Youth Society "(1911, 1912/1913)," The Permanent Exhibition of Contemporary Art (St. Petersburg, 1913).
Since 1918 he lived in Chisinau . Together with the Bessarabian artists Alexander Plamediale and Schneier Kogan, he led the development of the art institutions of Bessarabia during its entry into the Romanian kingdom [1] .
Until 1940 he taught at the School of Fine Arts. In 1924-1930 - the main production designer of the Chisinau National Theater . Founder and vice president of the Society of Fine Arts (1921), participant in all exhibitions of the society.
In 1939-1942 he was the chief curator and director of the Chisinau City Art Gallery (Pinakothek), on the basis of which the National Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Moldova arose.
Since 1943 he lived in Bucharest . In 1945, together with his daughter, the artist Tanya Balllier, held a solo exhibition in Bucharest.
He painted portraits , still lifes , interiors, landscapes in an impressionistic and post-impressionist manner.
Some of his works are in the National Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Moldova.
In 2009, the Post of Moldova issued a stamp with the image of A. Ballier.
