Play career

At the end of 1987, Florencia Labat became the winner of the prestigious junior tournament Orange Bowl in the age group up to 16 years [2] . At the same time, she won her first adult title, winning the ITF women's cycle tournament in Buenos Aires together with Federica Haumuler , and in the autumn of the next year she won twice in tournaments of the same level in singles.

In 1989, the 17-year-old Labat reached the quarterfinals of the French Open among girls, losing to Jennifer Capriati , and soon after the 18th birthday she became the semi-finalist of the US Open among girls, where she lost to Rachel McQuillan [3] . Although Labat had no victories in Grand Slam tournaments , at the end of the season she was declared ITF the first racket of the world among girls [4] . In the adult ITF tournaments this year she had two titles in singles and three in doubles, and at higher levels she won the quarterfinal of the WTA tournaments in Arcachon (losing to the 26th world number Barbara Paulus ) and Phoenix and in the second Circle adult US Open (after winning the first round of the 17th World No. Katharina Lindquist ). In October, she held her first match for the Argentina national team in the Federation Cup , losing in a pair with Mercedes Paz Manuela and Katerina Maleev from the Bulgarian team .

1990 Labat had already fully held in the WTA tournaments, having reached her first final at this level in doubles in July in Palermo, and in April 1991 she won her first champion title in Taranto. In 1991 and 1992, Labat won five low-level WTA tournaments in doubles. In singles, she achieved the best results at the US Open: in 1991 she managed to beat two competitors from the Top-20 rating (sown on the 14th number of Natalie Tozia and then Amy Fraser ) before flying out in the third round, and in 1992 after the victory over the 19th racket of the world Amanda Kötzer, she went into the fourth round, where her promotion was stopped by Steffi Graf, who occupied the second place in the rating. 1992 Labat finished on the immediate approaches to the Top-50 ranking in singles and doubles.

1993 was marked for Labat by the first final of the WTA tournament in singles (at the Brazilian Open , where she won the first racket of the tournament Sabina Haq , as well as with Argentina in the semifinals of the World Cup Federation Cup. In the quarterfinal match with the USA team, Labat brought her the decisive point for the national team, defeating Lori Macnill 5–7, 6–3, 6–0, and securing the Argentineans an early victory after Ines Gorroctegi defeated Lindsay Davenport. [5] In the first half of 1994, Labat three times attended the WTA finals in single However, not once having achieved a victory in them, I won the fourth round in the Wimbledon tournament , defeating Hack in the first match, which by that time occupied 15th place in the rating. by September she was able to reach the 26th place in the ranking - the highest in her career.

In 1995, after dividing the World Cup of the Federation Cup into two, Labat helped her team to beat the Indonesian team in the World Group II, and then defeat the Australian team in the transitional match for the right to compete in the top echelon. At the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, she won the gold medal in singles, beating American Anne Grossman in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-3 [6] . In July 1996, in Palermo, she entered the WTA first doubles final in three years and finished the season among two hundred best doubles in the world after two years break; the following year there were already three finals, although none brought Lábat's title; The first title in almost six years Lábat paired with the Belgian Dominique van Rost won only in May 1998 at the Spanish Open in Madrid. Before that, in Rome, van Rost and Labat beat one of the best couples in the world, Caroline Vis - Yayuk Basuki, on their way to the semi-finals. In singles in these years, Labat continued to be held in the first hundred of the rankings, without achieving any high-profile successes. Her best results were the exit in the fourth round of the US Open in 1997 (where she lost the first racket of the world to Martina Hingis ) and a victory at the 1998 Canadian Open over the tenth racket of the world Patti Schnyder .

In 1999, Labat showed its best result in Grand Slam tournaments, breaking through with Van Rost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after defeating seeded Elena Likhovtseva and Ai Sugiyama in fifth number. After that, Labat rose in the pair rating to the 27th place. However, in the next two Grand Slam tournaments, the Belgian-Argentine couple dropped out of the fight in the third round and broke up after Wimbledon. After that, in the fall of 1999 and in 2000, Lábat went three times to the finals of the WTA tournaments, in the latter of which he won his seventh title at this level. The last tournament in Labat’s career was in the fall of 2000 the Sydney Olympics , where she lost in the first round to the Dutch tennis player Miriam Oremans .
