This was the first season under the direction of new head coach Dave Sexton , who replaced Tommy Doherty , who was laid off in July 1977.
As the winner of the FA Cup of the previous season, United played in the match for the English Super Cup against the champion of the previous season, Liverpool . The match ended in a goalless draw, which meant a “divided victory”. In the championship, the team took 10th place, and also unsuccessfully played in home cups and in the European arena.
In the first round of the Cup Winners' Cup , United was disqualified due to riots arranged by their fans in France in a away match against Saint-Etienne . After the appeal, the disqualification was replaced by a return match in a neutral field instead of Old Trafford. As a result, United went to the next round, in which they lost to Port .
The team's best scorer of the season was Winger Gordon Hill , who scored 17 goals for the team in the championship and 19 in all tournaments. At the end of the season, he was sold at Derby County , which was headed by Tommy Docherty, who was fired from United a year ago.
