Neil McGregor is director of the British Museum . Under his leadership, the British Museum became an active conductor of British "cultural diplomacy", organizing cross-exhibitions and rental of exhibits from its collection for museums from countries that have difficult relations with the UK: for example, in 2014, against the background of sanctions imposed by the UK against Russia , The British Museum donated a statue of Ilyssos to organize an exhibition at the State Hermitage Museum [6] , previously the museum collaborated with cultural institutions in Iran and China [7] . Responding to criticism addressed to the British Museum in connection with cooperation with the Hermitage at the time of the exacerbation of interstate relations, Neil Macregore said:
“The colder the relations between countries, the more important the cooperation of museums becomes ... [8] The British Museum and the Hermitage are almost twin brothers. The Hermitage opened five years later than we did, and both institutions were originally conceived as museums of the European Enlightenment. Nothing illustrates our understanding that the British Museum is a world heritage museum, open to the whole world, better than this project ” [9] .
Attendance of the British Museum during the work of McGregor increased from 4.6 million in 2002-2003. up to 6.7 million people a year in 2014-2015 [3] .
