Title

The name of the lake is associated with the expansion of the former city of Velka (now the urban quarter of Poprad ). This territory originally belonged to the Gerlach and Wielkoslavsk regions, but it got its name from the city of Velka. The new form of the adjective (according to the Dictionary of the Slovak language) is “veľčianske / velčansk” (lake), but nevertheless, the word “velické / Velitsky” lake, Velitskaya valley, Velitsky shtit is used in the name of the lake, valley and mountain peak. The change of name that appeared in the 13th century is undoubtedly completely subject to the rules of the Slovak language. [3]

Hiking

Around the lake there is a hiking trail (green marking) leading from the Silesian House to the Polish Ridge. A trail also leads from the Wieliczka Valley to Gerlachowski Shtit. Climbing it is allowed only with a mountain guide. [5]

Attractions

Lake Velitske Pleso was formed after the retreat of the iceberg . Above it is a small moraine . Its flat bottom is created by erosion . [6] On his shore in a specially constructed pavilion on July 3, 1995, during a visit to Slovakia, Pope John Paul II prayed.
