Biography
The son of Charles II of Neapolitan (Angevin) and the daughter of the king of Hungary Stephen (Ishtvan) V Maria of Hungary .
His mother was the daughter of the Hungarian king Stephen V (Stephen V). After the death of her brother, King Laszlo IV of Hungary (Vladislav IV) in 1290 , she claimed her rights to the throne of Hungary. Pope Nicholas IV , who claimed the right to appoint the Hungarian kings, supported her candidacy. In 1291 she was crowned in Naples, and soon transferred the title to the throne to Karl Martell. Whether he was crowned is unknown. Karl Martell was not ambitious and only under the influence of his mother in 1294 made a sluggish attempt to realize their rights, but did not receive support from the Hungarian nobility, despite the constant feuds with the ruling king of Hungary Andras III (Andrew III). Soon Karl Martell died of the plague in Naples in 1295 at the age of 24 years old.
The son of Karl Martel, Charles I Robert (1288-1342), who founded the Angevin dynasty, which reigned in Hungary until 1395, was able to get the Hungarian crown.
Karl Martell was a close friend of Dante Alighieri ; he is even mentioned in the Divine Comedy : the poet meets the soul of the deceased Karl Martel in the third sphere of Paradise.
