Stepanyan, Leo Surenovich

Leo Surenovich Stepanyan (March 19, 1931, Yerevan - February 16, 2002, Moscow ) - Soviet and Russian ornithologist, leading bird taxonomy in the USSR and Russia at the end of the 20th century.

Biography

Born March 19, 1931 in Yerevan . Father - doctor Suren Nikolaevich Stepanyan, mother - Julia Kuzminichna nee? Soon the family moved to Essentuki . In 1950 he graduated from high school in Essentuki and entered the Faculty of Biology and Soil of Moscow State University . He studied at the Department of Vertebrate Zoology with G.P. Dementiev , V. G. Heptner , E. S. Ptushenko .

In 1955 he graduated from Moscow State University , for two years he worked as an employee of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University and a guide there [1] . From 1957 to 1975 he taught at the Department of Zoology of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. V.I. Lenin. Since 1958, an assistant to this department [1] . For some time he worked at the Institute of Geography [1] . He participated and led ornithological expeditions to the Tien Shan and Pamir, to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, to the Urals, Sakhalin and the Caucasus. In 1962, at the Academic Council of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University, he defended his thesis "Ecological and geographical analysis of the avifauna of the Terskey-Ala-Tau (Tien Shan) ridge" [1] . From 1961 to 1973 he had a permanent job in the ornithology department of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University [1] .

In 1975 he moved to the Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Animal Ecology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now - IPEE RAS). He participated there in expeditions to Mongolia, Vietnam and North Korea and on the scientific ship Callisto along the islands of the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

In 1990, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Sub-species and double species in the avifauna of the USSR" [1] .

An active collector of carcasses of birds, had a unique private collection, which after the death of L. S. Stepanyan entered the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University [2] .

Member of the editorial board of the Zoological Journal and the yearbook Ornithology. Member of the All-Union Ornithological Committee, The International Committee on Ornithological Nomenclature, Council of the All-Union Ornithological Society, headed the Library Council of the IEME.

The author of about 230 scientific papers, including 6 books. Described 14 new subspecies of birds [3] , some of which were later recognized as species.
