Biography
Adam Cardonnell, born in 1846 or 1847 [3] , was the only surviving son in the Mansfeldt de Cardonnell family of Musselborough , the customs and salt tax commissioner of Scotland, and Ann Hilton [4] .
After receiving medical education, Cardonnell for some time engaged in surgical practice. Significant fortune allowed him to devote a lot of time and funds to his hobbies - numismatics, in which he became a specialist, and collecting antiquities. In 1780, with the establishment of the Antiquarian Society of Scotland, Cardonnell was elected its member, and in 1782-1784 he held the position of curator. In the second volume of the Archæologia Scotica journal , he published his article “A Description of the Roman Ruins Found in Invereres” ( born Description of the Roman Ruins discovered at Inveresk ). Cardonnell greatly assisted Francis Grose during the latter’s visit to Scotland, both accompanying him during a visit to an archaeological site, and providing him with descriptions of his extensive collections [4] .
After the death of his relative Hilton Lawson in Northumberland, Cardonell was the only heir to his condition and moved from Scotland to England, adding to the generic surname also the surname Lawson. In 1796 he took the place of the county sheriff. The last years of his life he mainly spent in Bata , having died in 1820 at the age of 73 years. He was buried on June 14, 1820 in Northumberland]. His son, also bearing the name of Adam, died childless in 1838, after which the male line of the clan was interrupted [4] .
