"Kaluzhnitsy" - a picture of the English artist -Pre-Raphaelite Dante Gabriel Rossetti , created in 1873 . Currently, the painting is in the museum of Nottingham Castle.

The picture shows the daughter of a gardener who worked at the William Morris mansion in Kelmscott Annie [1] . At that time, the possibilities to paint portraits with Jane Morris and Alexa Wilding were limited, and in the person of Annie Rossetti I found a model who could constantly be with him [2] . In the picture, the girl looks much older than Annie was; more truthfully, her appearance is depicted on a pencil sketch of Rossetti in 1874 [2] .
In a letter to his patron and frequent buyer of paintings, Frederick Leyland, Rossetti mentioned that he was going to call the picture “Spring Cudgels” or “Virgin from the Arbor”, and also compared the work with his painting “ Veronica Veronese ”, stating that the new work is not inferior to performance, nor in working with color and is replete with realistic details [1] . The painting depicts a girl arranging swamp moss in a vase, according to Rossetti, the very first spring flowers appearing in Kelmscott [1] . Rosetti was delighted with these flowers and in a letter to his mother promised to send her a bouquet [3] .
Frederick Leyland refused to buy the painting (perhaps considering the price requested by the artist was too high), then William Graham bought it for 825 pounds [4] .
The art critic William Sharp wrote that “the painting was attributed to one of his few contemporary works, but ... it certainly combines many more elements from an earlier period in art than from the nineteenth century” [3] .
