Biography

Medal of authorship by Maria Zambaco

Maria Cassavetti was born into a family of Greek origin. Her uncle was a philanthropist and patron of the arts Alexander Konstantin Ionides , cousins - artists Maria Spartali Stillman and Aglaya Koronio . Three girls were known among friends as “Three Graces” in honor of the three Hariths of Greek mythology, Aglaya , Euphrosyne and Talia, since all three were famous beauties of Greek origin.

In 1858, Maria Cassavetti received an inheritance after the death of her father and could lead an independent life [3] . Maria decided to devote her life to art and went to study in Paris, where her mentors were Alphonse Legros and Auguste Rodin . Her works were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts [4] , at the Paris Salon [5] , four sculptural medals are in the collection of the British Museum [6] .

In 1860, Maria rejected the courtship of George Dumurier , who later called her "rude and impregnable, but with great talent and truly incredible beauty." She preferred Dr. Zambaco to him, whom she married in the same year. A son and daughter were born in the marriage, but the marriage was unsuccessful, and in 1866, Maria decided to live again with her mother in London.

In 1866, Maria Zambako met Edward Burne-Jones and subsequently became a model for many of his paintings. A romance broke out between them, lasting several years. In 1869, Burne-Jones tried to leave his wife, Georgiana, in order to live with Maria Zambako, which provoked a big scandal [7] . In 1871, Mary persuaded Byrne-Jones to commit suicide together from an overdose of opium on a street in Venice, but they were prevented by the police [8] . After the breakup, Maria continued to pose for Burns-Jones paintings. She was also a model with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James Abbot McNeill Whistler .

Maria Zambako died in Paris in 1914, her body was sent to the family crypt in Norwood.
