History
The museum opened on January 10, 1880 in a monumental building built in 1632 . The construction was originally owned by the municipality. Later she was occupied by the court. Until 1932, the canton court was partially housed in the building, and partly a museum.
The museum has a large collection of paintings, silver objects, porcelain, historical firearms, city guards and the Dutch East India Company .
The collection is exhibited in 25 rooms. In 1953, cellars of the 15th century were discovered under the building. Thus, the archaeological finds of Horn and its environs are exhibited in museums.
Collection Theft
On the night of January 9, 2005, the attackers, breaking the door, stole 24 paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries , in particular, by Jan van Goyen , and 70 silver objects from the museum. [1] For ten years, the museum has been searching for stolen artifacts. [2]
In January 2014, the Dutch police found out that the missing paintings are in Ukraine . [3]
In April 2016, Ukraine returned four paintings identified by the SBU to the museum [4] .
