The National Aquarium (formerly known as the Baltimore National Aquarium ) is a non - profit public aquarium located at 501 Al Pratt Street in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore, Maryland in the United States . Built during the Baltimore reconstruction period, the aquarium was opened on August 8, 1981. The aquarium is visited annually by 1.5 million people. It holds more than gallons of water ( liters), and contains 17,000 samples representing more than 750 species [3] . In 2003, the National Aquarium and the independent National Aquarium in Washington merged as one National Aquarium. The mission of the National Aquarium is to inspire the conservation of water treasures in the world. The main goal of the aquarium is to confront the pressing challenges facing global aquatic habitats through innovative science, species conservation and educational programs [2] .

Recognition and Rewards
In 2012, the National Aquarium was named one of the best aquariums in the United States according to the Travel Channel [5] , and also won the popular vote as one of the five best aquariums to visit [6] .
