Salvatore [3] Cordelli 1796 arrived in St. Petersburg . In 1813 he was awarded the title engraver of His Majesty . Designated Academician of the Academy of Arts
In 1797, he engraved a very similar portrait of Emperor Paul I, in 1798 - "A hearse over the ashes of the Duke of Wirttemberg", and in 1814 he received the title of court engraver, with a content of 1,200 rubles each. per year from His Majesty’s Cabinet [4] .
His portraits of many war heroes of 1812 and the published collection ( 1813 ) of twelve major victories of Russians over the French, engraved by them from Domenico Scotti ’s pictures with the help of Russian masters S. Fedorov and K. Beggrov (2nd ed., M. 1879 ) .
And also according to the drawings by A. O. Orlovsky [5] , [6] , [7] .
Among his undoubted successes include the “Portrait of Count MI Platov,” which should be dated to 1810s. He was decorated with a picture by A. O. Orlovsky (1777–1832) - one of the most prominent and original Russian artists of the first quarter of the 19th century, who worked in the spirit of romanticism. The masterful engraver Cardelli could very convincingly convey the features of a colored picture painted with oil paints in a black and white stroked manner of the incisal engraving. It should be noted that the high quality of the most picturesque original was the key to successful “translation” of one art form into a specific language of another

- ↑ In ESBE, he is erroneously called “Solomon” - probably due to the incorrect opening of the initial “S.” or rather the abbreviation “Sal.” In the future, this version was widely sold, hitting, in particular, in the Jewish Electronic Encyclopedia . However, no sources for this option are usually given.
