Freestyle wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1968 Olympic Games at medium weight (up to 87 kilograms) were held in Mexico City from October 17 to October 29, 1968 in the Ice Rink of the Insurgents.

The tournament was held on the system with the accrual of penalty points.

  • 0 penalty points in case of a clear victory or disqualification of the opponent, as well as no-show;
  • 0.5 penalty points in case of victory due to obvious technical superiority (by eight or more points);
  • 1 penalty point in case of victory by points (with a difference of less than eight points);
  • 2 penalty points in the case of an effective draw;
  • 2.5 penalty points in the case of an ineffectual draw (passive draw);
  • 3 penalty points in case of defeat by points (with a difference of less than eight points);
  • 3.5 penalty points in case of defeat due to the obvious technical superiority of the opponent (by eight or more points);
  • 4 penalty points in case of a pure defeat or disqualification as well as non-appearance.

The three remaining wrestlers reached the final, where they held meetings with each other. Meetings between the finalists, held in the preliminary bouts, were taken into account. The fight, according to the tournament regulations, lasted 9 minutes in three three-minute periods, the less active wrestler was put in the pit. Could be assigned overtime.

On average weight 22 participants struggled. The youngest participant was 18-year-old Robert Nihon, the oldest-aged 37-year-old Julio Graffigna. Boris Gurevich , world and European champion in 1968 was regarded as a clear favorite; He could compete with the current Olympic champion, world champion in 1966. Sold Sold Garjev . The struggle for the finals was delayed, and as a result, formally there was no final at all. By the seventh circle, Boris Gurevich was leading by a large margin. Based on the tournament position, he almost safely could even afford a loss on points in a meeting with Gardzhev, since such a defeat left him in the tournament, and Gardzhev dropped out. Given the fact that in the second pair, where Zhigzhidiin Munkhbat and Thomas Peckham fought, only a clear victory of one of the wrestlers left him in the tournament, there were many chances that the tournament would end in the seventh round with the only undetected wrestler Boris Gurevich. And so it happened: Gurevich brought his meeting with Garzhev in a draw, and all the other wrestlers dropped out. Gurevich was the winner, and the remaining prizes were distributed by the number of penalty points.
