Creation History
In 1928, the Imperial Navy of Japan formed an order to develop new long-range and short-range reconnaissance seaplanes to replace the obsolete Yokosuka E1Y and Nakajima E2N, respectively.
As a replacement for the E1Y , the Yokosuka E5Y aircraft, developed by the Yokosuka Navy Arsenal, was adopted. It was produced in the factories of Kawanishi . Since the fleet did not satisfy its characteristics, Kawanishi decided to upgrade it by installing a more powerful Hiro Type 91-1 engine (620 hp). This model was named E5K, a total of 17 aircraft were built. But replacing the engine did not improve flight performance, and the fleet ordered Aichi to produce a modified E1Y3 aircraft.
