Biography
Education and early career
In 1983, Angela Eagle together with her twin sister graduated from Oxford University , where they have studied since 1979 in various colleges. Maria became a lawyer and only in 1997 went to parliament, and Angela took up trade union work [1] .
Since 1992, Angela Eagle has consistently been elected to the House of Commons as a candidate from the Labor Party in the constituency ( Merseyside ceremonial county) [2] .
In parliament in 1996-1997 she held the position of parliamentary organizer , in 1997-1998 she was junior minister of gardening and regeneration in Blair's office , in 1998-2001 she worked in the [3] , then she worked on issues of immigration to Home office , but in May 2002, in the course of the next cabinet reshuffle, it was left without any government post [4] . In March 2003, she voted for the military campaign in Iraq and subsequently always voted against the investigation of the circumstances leading up to this war. In September 2014, she supported the decision of the United Kingdom to deliver air strikes against objects of the Islamic state in Iraq, and in December 2015, for spreading the zone of these bombardments to Syria [5] .
Gordon Brown Cabinet
In 2007, she became in the office of Gordon Brown [6] .
On June 8, 2009, she was appointed junior minister to the Department of Labor and Pensions [7] .
On May 11, 2010, David Cameron formed a coalition government of the Conservative and Liberal-Democratic parties on the basis of parliamentary elections on May 7, 2010 , and the Brown cabinet ceased to exist [8] .
Labor Party Shadow Cabinets (2010—2016)
On October 8, 2010, she was appointed Shadow Chief Secretary of the Treasury in the shadow office of Ed Miliband [9] , and on October 7, 2011, she became the shadow leader of the House of Commons [10] .
According to the results of the parliamentary elections on May 7, 2015, she again won in her traditional constituency of Wallace with the result of 60.4%, having improved her result in the 2010 elections by 8.6% [11] .
On September 13, 2015, a new Labor leader, Jeremy Corbin, formed his shadow cabinet , in which Eagle received portfolios of the shadow minister of entrepreneurship and the first minister [12] .
On June 9, 2016, she took part in the debate of the ITV television company on the referendum on the UK leaving the European Union . Together with Nikola Sturgeon and Amber Rudd Angela Eagle, she defended the position of maintaining membership in the confrontation with former Mayor of London Boris Johnson , Andrea Leeds and , who argued the need for an exit [13] .
On June 27, 2016, she announced her exit from the Shadow Cabinet by Jeremy Corbin [14] .
Fight for leadership in the Labor Party
On June 28, 2016, against the background of the referendum and the mass resignations of members of the shadow cabinet, 172 Labor MPs voted for a vote of no confidence to Corbin (only 40 deputies supported him) [15] .
On July 11, 2016, Angela Eagle announced her entry into the . The statutes of the party allow one to challenge the current leader (for candidate registration, the support of 20% of Labor MPs is necessary). Corbin refused to resign and threatened the court if his candidacy was not automatically included in the list of candidates (the decision on admitting Corbin to elections without the support of the minimum required 51 deputies should be taken by the National Executive Committee of Labor) [16] .
July 19, 2016 withdrew her candidacy and announced support for another opponent of Corbin - Owen Smith [17] .
Personal life
Angela Eagle became the first female member of the British Parliament to announce her homosexual orientation. Married to Maria Ixall (Maria Exall) [18] .
