Biography

Born in 1821 in the city of Fayette , Seneca County, New York.

He lived with his father in Canada as a child, while his mother lived in Mount Pleasant , Ohio , fifteen miles north of Cincinnati . Robert lived in Canada until 1841 and moved to his mother in the United States. Wanting to do painting, he moved to Cincinnati. Having no special education but obsessed with becoming an artist, he studied art on his own, copying paintings and prints. By 1842, Duncanson painted three portraits, which he presented at an exhibition organized by the Society for the Promotion of Useful Knowledge at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts , which became his public debut. At the same time, he collaborated with the artist and photographer Coates. Duncanson's prowess grew, but the lack of a good reward for his work prompted him to move to Detroit in 1845.

In Detroit, he again began to paint portraits, was well received by the local press, met with local artist James H. Beard . But, tired of this city, in 1846 he returned to Cincinnati. He traveled to Europe, having been to England, Scotland, France and Italy. In the last years of his life he created his most important works.

In 1872, ill physically and mentally after the collapse of his exhibition in Detroit , he died here on December 21, 1872 . He was buried in the Woodland Cemetery cemetery in Monroe , Michigan . [2]

Duncanson was married twice, had three children - the sons of Reuben and Milton, as well as his daughter Bertu.
