He acted as a central defender from the 1980s to the 2000s. Boulde began his career in his hometown, speaking for the local Stoke City , where he gained a reputation as a promising young football player. After more than 8 years spent as part of the "potters", and becoming one of the most sought after English defenders, Bould moved to London's Arsenal. Together with Tony Adams , Nigel Witherburn and former Stoke partner Lee Dixon, he formed the famous Four Defenders. In 1999, Bould moved from Arsenal to Sunderland, where he ended his career.

After completing his career as a player, Bould successfully led the youth team for more than 10 years. At the start of the 2012/13 season, he took the position of assistant coach, replacing Pat Rice .

Club career

Stoke City

Bould was born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, where in 1978 he entered into his first contract with a local Stoke City club. His professional career began two years later, and his first debut on the field took place in September 1981 in a match against Middlesbrough , in which his team lost with a score of 3-2. At that time, Steve played as a right-back. He received little playing practice, so in October 1982 he went on loan to Torquay United [1] .

Bould began to appear regularly in the base after the then-Stock coach Mick Mills transferred him to the center to replace Paul Dyson. A back injury that he received in the 1986–87 season did not allow him to finish the season and perhaps prevented his team from getting into the playoff round. By the time the 1987-88 season ended, it was obvious that he was one of the best defenders in the Second Division . Arsenal and Everton were negotiating its acquisition. As a result, Bould moved to Arsenal for an amount of 390 thousand pounds [1] .

Arsenal

Bould officially became a player in the Arsenal on June 13, 1988, and soon became one of the famous four defenders of the London club, which besides him included Tony Adams , Nigel Witherburn and Lee Dixon . As part of the Gunners, he twice won the First Division in the seasons 1988/89 and 1990/91.

On August 15, 1992, he scored the first goal of the Arsenal in the first season of the Premier League , which replaced the First Division. Despite this, the “gunners” were defeated with a score of 4-2 from Norwich City . Injuries did not allow him to play in the finals of the FA Cup and League Cup 1992/93. Andy Liningham took his place in the squad.

After winning the Cup winners' Cup in 1994, stagnation was outlined in the game of Arsenal and Bould. With the arrival of Arsene Wenger in 1996, rumors appeared that he would leave the team, because in his place at the base Martin Kioun often began to leave. However, this did not happen, moreover, Steve became one of the important elements of the winning double in the 1997/98 season.

Bould’s last season with the Londoners was unsuccessful for the team: the Gunners lost the FA Cup and the Manchester United Championship gold medals, which they won the treble that season.

Sunderland

In July 1999, Bould moved to Sunderland for an amount of £ 500,000. After leaving in December 1999, Kevin Ball, the former captain of the team, Bould received a captain's armband. His game in the 1999/00 season helped Sunderland take the seventh place in the table.

September 1, 2000, Bould announced the completion of a player's career.

International Career

Despite the fact that Bould was one of the best English defenders of those years, he spent only two matches for the England team. These were friendly games against the national teams of Greece and Norway .

Coach Career

In June 2001, Bould returned to Arsenal, where he became the coach of the youth team. Under his leadership, the team won the Premier League twice in the seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 and the England Youth Cup 2009. On May 10, 2012, it was announced that Bould would be Arsen Wenger's new assistant instead of Pat Rice, who left the club for health reasons
