Background

After the defeat of the Russian detachment near Skala, the rebels managed to break through the encirclement of the Russians and go southeast to the Mehov district, and set up their camp near the village of Goshcha, only 9 kilometers from the Austrian border.

There, thanks to the inaction of the regular troops, the rebels managed to get a significant replenishment, consisting of volunteers from nearby villages and Galicia . As a result, by the beginning of March they had more than 3,000 personnel and several guns.

February 26 (March 10) Langevich proclaimed himself the dictator of the uprising.

The next day, he appointed the commander of his “armed forces” the rebel colonel Anthony Jezyoransky , giving him the rank of general]. However, Jezioransky opposed the dictatorship of Langevich, and as a result of the conflict between them, he led his detachment from several hundred rebels into the Austrian Empire , weakening the strength of Langevich.

On the morning of February 28 (March 12), Langevich received a report from local residents that regular troops were going to attack his camp in Goshche, as a result of which, on the night of March 1 (March 13), the rebels left Goshcha and marched north, intending to invade in Kielce or Stopnitsky Uyezd (now Kalecki and Busi counties ентwiętokrzyskie Voivodeship , Poland ).

In response to this, a detachment of Colonel Chengerogo (4 companies of infantry, 2 squadrons of dragoons, fifty Cossacks, 4 guns) came out of Kielce on March 4 (16), a total of about 1,000 people.

Following first, across, and then on the heels of the enemy, in the afternoon of March 5 (17), the Chenger caught up with the rearguard column of Polish rebels, who were leaving with a few convoys from the village of Khrobzh.

Fight

Having noticed the rebels, Russian artillery, on Chingery’s order, advanced to positions and opened fire on them with buckshot , intending to impose a battle on them in favorable conditions. However, the infantry of the regular troops was late and did not allow those to enter the battle with full value.

The rebels who were in the open, suffering significant losses, threw one of several carts, and began to retreat in a hurry towards the rest of the forces of Langevich.

A small column of casiners tried to attack the defenseless Russian artillery 500 meters from them, but none of them managed to reach the guns, having suffered serious losses under the pressure of buckshot.

A number of rebel armed with guns under the command of Colonel Chachovsky opened fire on the Russians, covering up the retreat of their comrades.

In the end, the rebels managed to cross in a hurry with the help of a wooden bridge to the other side of the Nida (they burnt the bridge behind them) and join the main forces of Langevich, who were concentrated in the dense forest, northwest of the town of Busko-Zdroj . Russian artillery was forced to cease fire due to the onset of darkness and the unsuitability of infantry.

Consequences

The rebels suffered significant losses in the battle, from 100 to 150 killed and wounded, in addition, at least one convoy was captured by regular troops. The Russians got two guns taken from the rebels, as well as more than 500 fittings . However, both sides declared their victory. The Poles reported that the losses of the Russians also exceeded 300 people killed and wounded. However, Chingers in his report on losses says that “in the clash with the Polish rebel gangs near Khrobž, one gunner died and four were injured, two of them were seriously" [1] In fact, the battle ended in a draw, as the regular troops failed to completely destroy the rebel connection, and the rebels were able to retreat into the dense forest, northwest of the town of Busko-Zdroj , which led the next day to the battle of Grohovisko .
