Crater Description

Surroundings of Webb Crater. Shot of the Lunar Orbiter-IV probe.

The immediate neighbors of the crater are Amegino Crater in the northwest; Condon Crater in the north; Hargreaves Crater in the east-south-east, Acosta Crater in the south and Naonobu Crater in the south-south-west. To the west of the crater are Andrusov ridges ; in the northwest is the Bay of Success ; in the northeast of the Sea of Foam [1] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 21.4 km [2] , depth 1850 m [3] .

Webb Crater has a circular shape with protrusions in the eastern and northern parts and is practically not destroyed. A crater shaft with a clearly defined sharp edge and a smooth inner slope with high albedo , small chains of craters adjoin the western and eastern parts of the shaft. The mountainous coast of the Gulf of Success adjoins the northern part of the crater. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 800 m [4] , the volume of the crater is approximately 270 km³ [4] . The bottom of the crater bowl is dotted with small craters, hilly in the northern part of the bowl, more even in the southern. In the center of the bowl is a low, rounded hill with a shallow crater at the top.

  • Webb Crater H is one of the craters in which temperature anomalies were recorded during eclipses . This is explained by the fact that such craters are small in age and the rocks did not have time to become covered with regolith , which has a thermally insulating effect.
