The river originates in the southeast of the Mazanovsky district , on an elevated stretch of the eastern periphery of the Zeya-Bureya plain, in the coniferous-deciduous forest zone, 27 kilometers east of the village of Margaritovka . It flows westward, towards the left bank of the Zeya River, along a wide, swampy valley. The riverbed is meandering, the course is slow. In the upper and middle reaches, the width of the river does not exceed 50 meters. In the lower reaches, the river becomes less agile and winding, the width reaches 100-150 meters.
The river valley is populated, near its banks there are more than a dozen villages of the Mazanovsky district and one village of Seryshevsky district. The largest of them are: Krasnoyarovo (500 meters south of the mouth), Sapronovo , Margaritovka , Dmitrievka .
Presumably, the name of the river came from the Evenki Birai - “big river” or birii - “river” [3] .
