He graduated with honors from the Agronomy Department of the Zhytomyr Agricultural Institute with a degree in hop-growing.

In 1971-1973 - served in the armed forces of the USSR, took part in hostilities in African countries.

Since 1973 he has been working at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Potato in the town. Nemeshaevo as a junior, and since 1980 - a senior research fellow.

From 1984 to the end of his life, he was the head of the laboratory for cell breeding at the institute.

In 1989, he was elected as a collective director of the Institute UNIIKH.

Scientific activity

In 1982 he defended his thesis "Interspecific somatic hybridization in the genus Solanum by the method of fusion of isolated protoplasts" at the Institute of Plant Physiology named after K.A. Timiryazev Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Under the leadership of Anatoly Kuchka, in the laboratory of cell breeding, using biotechnological methods with a genetic selection purpose, a number of cell engineering technologies have been developed that are used in genetics and potato breeding to create new output forms and improve existing varieties according to individual economically valuable traits. With this method of cell engineering, under his leadership, a medium-late Olbia potato variety was created.

For a series of works on the development of the fundamental principles of plant cell (genetic) engineering, a group of scientists A. A. Kuchko, V. A. Vitenko, K. M. Sitniku, Yu. Yu. Glebe, V. N. Sidorov, I. K. Komarnitsky , G. G. Butenko - USSR State Prize in the field of science and technology (1984). In 1986, he was promoted to senior researcher with a degree in plant physiology. In 1992, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine “Development and application of biotechnological methods for creating the initial potato breeding material”, in which he formulated a new concept for the use of cellular technologies in the potato breeding process.

In 1993, A. A. Kuchko was elected a corresponding member of the UAAS for achievements in science and higher education, and in 1995 - a full member (academician) of the UAAS. As part of a team of authors (A. A. Kuchko, V. M. Mitsko, T. M. Oleinik, N. Yu. Vlasenko) in 1999 he was awarded the UAAS for the series of works “Physiological and Biotechnological Basics of Selection and Increasing Potato Productivity”.

Scientific and organizational work

He headed the Potato Research Center, the Coordination and Methodological Council for Potato Production of Ukraine, was the editor-in-chief of the inter-agency thematic scientific collection Potato Production, and since 1997, he was the deputy chairman of the Potato Expert Council of the State Commission for Variety Testing and Protection of Plant Varieties.

On the initiative of A. A. Kuchko, in 1993, a postgraduate study was opened at the Potato Institute in the specialties of “selection and seed production”, “plant growing”, and “biotechnology”. Under the leadership of Anatoly Kuchko, one doctoral and three master's theses were defended.

Community Activities

He was elected as a deputy of the Kiev Regional Council from Borodyansky constituency No. 15. He worked in the Standing Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Youth and Sports, as well as in the Commission on Agro-Industrial Complex.
