Vashchenko, Vasily Semenovich

In 1930 he graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Institute of Public Education .

In 1933 - 1977 (with a break) he worked at the University of Dnepropetrovsk . Assistant, associate professor, dean, assistant to the rector, 1939-1967 (with a break) - head of the Ukrainian language department, professor.

Since 1958 , concurrently - a senior researcher in the dictionary department of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

He was buried in the central avenue of the Sur-Lithuanian cemetery in the city of Dnipro. Linguist Polina Aleksandrovna Petrova was buried in the neighborhood (February 1, 1922 - January 22, 1999).

Founder of research in the field of Ukrainian dialectology , lexicography , lexicology of linguostylistics, history of language.

The author of the chapters in the book “Modern Ukrainian literary speech. Stylistics ”(K., 1973 ) and a number of articles devoted to issues of the Ukrainian literary language, the history of Ukrainian linguistics (about Meletia Smotrytskog , A. Pavlovsky, I. Sreznevsky, P. Zhitetskiy, A. Krymsky, E. Timchenko , G. Sherstyuk, P. Zalozny), the first textbooks of the Ukrainian language. He studied the language of I. Kotlyarevsky (“Vocabulary of the“ Aeneids ”of Kotlyarevsky: Word usage”, H., 1955, et al.), T. Shevchenko (“Speech of Taras Shevchenko” , H., 1963 ; “Shevchenkova lexicon”, K., 1951 , co-author; “Epithets of the poetic language of T. G. Shevchenko” , Dn., 1982), I. Franko , N. Kotsyubinsky, A. Gonchar . He concluded several textbooks and manuals on the modern Ukrainian literary language for secondary and higher schools, in particular, “Ukrainian Language”, H., 1959 ; 1961 ; “Samples of the modern Ukrainian language and exercises for teaching”, H., 1961 ; "Introduction to the study of the modern Ukrainian language", Dn., 1973 . Executive editor of the Shevchenko Language Dictionary (vol. 1-2 K., 1964 ; State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after T. Shevchenko, 1989 ).

Vashchenko’s works on Shevchenko studies highlighted the questions about the poet’s fundamental role in the formation of the Ukrainian literary language , analyzed the vocabulary , phraseology , grammatical structure and style of the poet, examined its folk poetical sources, characterized Shevchenko metaphors , comparisons , epithets , synonyms and word phrases like that.
