A composite list is the Human Development Index , designed to provide an approximate estimate of the standard of living of a population across all US states and the District of Columbia based on criteria such as income, life expectancy and education. According to data for 2014, the average value of the HDI in the United States is 0.915 and takes 8th place out of 187 countries. In general, the United States is characterized by a very high level of human development. The southeastern states with the largest black population remain the least developed.
