Biography

Born on September 28, 1914 in Datchet (Bershkir) [3] . The son of Hugh Richard Scarlett, 7th Baron Abinger and Marjorie Ursula McFill. He studied at Eton College and Cambridge College of Magdalena [3] , where he studied economics and received a bachelor's degree in art [4] . In 1936 he joined the British Army in the Royal Artillery Regiment [3] . During the Second World War he fought in France, Norway and India [3] , in 1947 he received the rank of lieutenant colonel and resigned [4] . In 1946 he received a master's degree in art from Magdalena College [6] .

After his father died in 1943, [3] James Richard Scarlett inherited the baronial title and Inverloch Castle from Fort William in Scotland, selling the castle after the war to a Canadian whiskey seller [4] and buying Klis Hall [3] from Alfamstone on the border of Essex and Suffolk [7] . Appointed in 1968 as deputy deputy of the parliament from Essex.

Scarlett was interested in the activities of amateur archaeologists who used metal detectors, and in 1979-1981 he took measures to oblige archaeologists to legally report the discovery of finds [3] . He also sought to preserve the traditional appearance of British villages, as a result of which in 1972-1982 he headed the branch of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England in Essex [4] . In 1974, he founded the Colne Stour Countryside Association . Scarlett also headed the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association (Scarlett’s grandmother was adopted by her son Mary and Percy Shelley) [3] . The collection of letters and manuscripts Shelley, which was kept by Scarlett, exhibited at the Bodleian library of Oxford. He was vice president of the Byron Society and a knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem [6] .

He died on September 23, 2002 at the 88th year of his life [3] .

Family

In 1957, married Isla Carolyn Rivett-Karnak [8] (1925–2011), sister of the last two Ronette-Karnak baronets. The sons of James Harry (9th Baron Abinger) and Peter Richard were born into the marriage.
