Biography
In 1862 he entered the University of Christiania , who graduated in 1867 as a candidate of theological sciences, and in 1878 received a doctorate in theology. Since 1880 - a teacher of practical theology. Professor since 1885.
Member of the Conservative Party of Norway . Minister of Culture and Church of Norway (1893-1895) in the office of Prime Minister Emil Stang (senior) . Member of the Council of State in 1895.
Bishop of Oslo (1896-1912). As a bishop, he maintained close ties with the royal house, represented several Norwegian national missions, including at the opening of the German Redemptor Church in Jerusalem in 1898.
The author of several major works, including the biography of the preacher , founder of Haugeanism, Hans Nielsen Hauge . The main contribution was made as a church historian, made a great contribution to the study of national religions.
