Peru Local Stamps - Issues of provisional postage stamps that were carried out in Lima and other cities and departments of Peru during the second half of the 19th century.
Description
Most of the local Peruvian issues appeared in 1881-1885. Among the issuers of such signs of postage were , Ankash , Apurimak , Arequipa , Ayacucho , Chachapoyas , , Chiclayo , Cuzco , Huacho , Mokegua , Paita , Pasco , Pisco , Piura , Puno and Ika [1] . These local brands had face values that corresponded to the monetary system of the city of Lima: 1 salt = 100 centavos [2] . There are numerous fakes of these issues [1] .
Major issues
Lima
In the years 1871-1884, stamps were issued for the city of Lima. The inscriptions on the stamps of the original drawing read: sp. “Lima” (“Lima”), “Porte franco” (“Delivery paid”), “Correos” (“Mail”). The overprints that were made on the Peruvian stamps had the texts: “Union Postal Universal. Lima. Perú ” (“ Universal Postal Union. Lima. Peru ”), “ Plata ” (“ Silver ”), “ Correos. Lima " (" Mail. Lima ") [2] .
In 1873, a special stamp was issued for the city post office of Lima, on which the llama was depicted. In 1884, a stamp was issued for Lima and the surrounding areas in the form of an overprint of a drawing of the sun and the inscription “Correos. Lima " (" Mail. Lima "), which was put on the Peruvian stamp of 1877. In 1883, stamps with the overprint “Lima. Correos ” (“ Lima. Mail ”) between two circles, but they were not brought into circulation. In 1883, stamps with the overprint “Union Postal Universal. Lima ” (“ Universal Postal Union. Lima ”) [3] .

In total, from 1871 to 1884, three postage stamps and 10 additional stamps were issued [2] .
Southern Peru
In 1881-1885, there was a state entity South Peru with an administrative center in Arequipa , which in 1885 obeyed the government of the Republic of Peru. During its existence, it issued 13 postage stamps. On fiscal stamps an overprint: "Provisional" ("Temporarily"). On the issued stamps of the original drawing of the inscription: “Correos del Perú” (“Post of Peru”), “Franqueo” (“Paid”) [2] .
Departments of South Peru
Separate departments of Southern Peru used their own postage stamps [2] .
Mokegua
In the department of Mokegua (with the administrative center of the same name ), from 1881 to 1885, 14 postage stamps [2] were issued, which were overprints on the postage stamps of Southern Peru: “Moquegua” (“Mokegua”) [1] [2] .
Puno
From 1881 to 1884, 14 postage stamps [2] were issued in the Department of Puno (center - Puno ), representing an overprint on the stamps of Southern Peru: “Puno” (“Puno”) [1] [2] .

Cuzco
Local stamps issued in the Cuzco department (center - Cuzco ) were overprints on stamps of South Peru and surcharge stamps of Peru. These overprints contained the texts: “18 distrito” (“18th district”) [2] , “Franqueo. Cuzco ” (“ Paid. Cuzco ”) [1] [2] , “ Franco ” (“ Paid ”). For the period 1881-1884, 19 marks were issued here [2] .

Apurimak
In this department with the center in Apurimak (Abankay), one local brand was used. It was published in 1885 in the form of an overprint on the stamp of South Peru: “Admon Pral de Correos del Depto de Apurimac” (“General Directorate of the Post Office of the Apurimac Department”) [2] .
Ayacucho
In 1881, during the war with Chile , a local graduation was carried out in the Ayacucho department (with the center of the same name). At the same time, on the Arequipa brandface value of 10 centavos was imprinted "Correo de Ayacucho" ("Ayacucho Post"). The specified stamp was in circulation only during February 1881 [4] .
In 1884, the department made three stamps for postal circulation. These were stamps of Southern Peru with the overprint “Correo de Ayacucho” (“Ayacucho Post”) [2] . According to other sources [4] , an overprint of the name of the city’s mail (between two concentric circles) was placed on Peru stamps.
Arequipa
During the war of 1879-1884 with Chile, the capital of the Peruvian state of Lima fell, and therefore the country's government was forced to settle in the city of Arequipa. In 1881, a postal service was temporarily created here, for the needs of which local stamps were issued through the following overprints [5] :
- "PROVISIONAL 1881-1882" ("Local production") - in January 1881 [1] [5] on fiscal stamps [5] ,
- "Arequipa" ("Arequipa") [1] [2] [5] in a circle - in February 1881 - March 1883 on Peru stamps (and on surcharge stamps) [5] .

The same overprint ("Arequipa") was made in May 1884 - April 1885, but already after the city was taken up by rebel opponents of the central government [1] [5] .

In total, 16 brands were issued for this department (with a center in Arequipa). Among the overprints made on various stamps of South Peru and Peru, there is also the text “Franca” (“Paid”) [2] .

Ica
In April and May 1884 [6] in the department of Ica (with the center of the same name ), overprints on Peru stamps were made: “Yca” (“Ica”) [1] [2] [6] , “Vapor” (“Steamboat”) [ 1] [2] , "J" ("Junta" - council of the department). In a similar way, seven grades were made [2] .
There are also overprints of Ica on the stamps of Chile. Since 1885, they again switched to the use of brands of Peru [6] .
Pasco
In 1884, two postage stamps were issued by the Pasco department (center - Cerro de Pasco ), which were Peru surcharge stamps with the Pasco (Pasco) stamp [2] .
Piura
In 1884, a department with the center of Piura of the same name issued 12 postage stamps [2] , for which overprints were made on Peru stamps: “Piura” (“Piura”), “Vapor” (“Steamboat”) [1] [2] .
Ankash
In the Peruvian region of Ankash , with the administrative center in the city of Huaraz , postage stamps were issued, which were overprints on the postage stamps of Peru: “Franca” (“Paid”) [1] [2] , “Correo y fiscal” (“Postage and fiscal stamps” "). A total of 11 such brands were issued [2] .
Alerta Pharmacy
In 1884, a private label was published in the city of Alerta. A pharmacist was made using the black ink inscription of the name of the city on the brand of Peru, published in 1879 [7] .
Northern Peru Edition
In 1895, during the uprising in Northern Peru, stamps were issued with an overprint of a new denomination and the inscription “Provisional” (“Provisory”). Stamps were in circulation for a short time - in March and April 1895 [8] .
