Barskhan , Barskan [1] , Verkhniy Barskhan, Barsgan are the names of the medieval city and the territory on the Barskoon River (southeastern coast of Issyk-Kul ). The first information about Barskhan is found in the works of Ibn Hordadbeh (9th century), where cities and towns along the trade route between East and West Turkestan are mentioned, the location of Nizhny Barskhan near Taraz city and Upper Barskhan on the southern coast of Issyk-Kul are reported. In the writings of the Persian historian Mahmud Gardizi (XI century), Upper Barskhan is the center of the territory of the Karluk tribes. His ruler bore the title "mana", in some sources - "tebin Barskhan". Formed in the VIII century, the Upper Barskhan existed until the XIII century (before the invasion of Genghis Khan ). The heyday between the X and XII centuries. It was a major trading center on the Great Silk Road .
The name of the city is preserved in the toponyms of Barskoon (Barsky, Barskaun), Barskoon [1] .
