The connection of the name with the name of one of the main characters of the novel by Herman Melville , Moby Dick - the harpooner Persian Fedalla is considered undoubted. It is likely that Melville, collecting materials for the novel, wrote down the Persian name from his ears and made a mistake, but it seems unlikely, given how carefully Melville approached the details of the narrative. At the same time, Melville did not know Farsi, and he did not have the appropriate reference literature. It is believed that Melville used the reprint of a popular American dictionary edited by Goodrich , in which there was no root “fide”, but there was a word fade, which translated from Arabic as “veil” or “father”, and in the second meaning the designation of the Zoroastrian god was erroneously attributed to the word -Father of the Avesta. The name changed in this way came up to Melville for his hero, who, according to the plot of the book, was a Persian Zoroastrian. [one]
