With the death in 1651 of the great-granddaughter of the 1st Duke, the Sandovalian clan left the title and for the following centuries “traveled” from clan to clan. On December 2, 1726, King Philip V bestowed on the 8th Duke of Lerma the dignity of a grandiose of Spain of the 1st class.
