Biography
He graduated from the Mining Institute in Petrograd ( 1915 ) and since 1920 he taught at it.
In 1920 - 1941 - He worked at the Geological Committee and the All-Union Scientific Research Geological Institute.
Since 1930 - professor at the Leningrad Mining Institute.
Key Scientific Achievements
- He proposed and developed the principles of classification of coal seams according to the type of spores present in them.
- He proposed his own genetic classification of coals, in which he distinguished two groups (humolites and sapropelites), and each of the groups was divided into two classes (1 - humites, 2 - liptobiolites, 3 - sapropelites and 4 - saprocolites).
- He developed lithology of coal strata and an understanding of the conditions of occurrence of coal seams. He developed the theory of facies .
- He was the leader of the project “Atlas of the Microstructure of Coals of the USSR” ( 1937 ) and the collection “Oblique Layering and its Geological Interpretation” ( 1940 ).
