Development
The game is being developed by id Software in conjunction with Saber Interactive ; the id Tech 5 [6] and Saber3D hybrid is used as the engine, where the latter is used for rendering and individual graphics operations [4] . Many professional players in previous Quake versions, in particular, John “ZeRo4” Hill [7], take part in the development and development.
The game is declared as exclusive to the PC . According to creative director Tim Willits, for a comfortable game at a professional level, a refresh rate of 120 hertz is required. This can only be achieved on this platform [8] .
On March 7, 2017, it was announced [9] about the start of accepting applications for closed beta testing of the game, which subsequently began on April 6, 2017 [10] .
The game was presented for public viewing at the PAX East exhibition, held in Boston on March 10-12, 2017. It became known [11] that Quake Champions will be distributed on a free-to-play basis. The game plans to matchmaking for duels and team game modes.
For the first time in the Quake series, the so-called champions appeared - characters who possess not only different characteristics of speed and health, but also one unique ability that can be applied once every few tens of seconds, after which it needs to be recharged.
QuakeCon 2017 hosted the Quake Champions World Cup [11] with a prize pool of $ 1 million [12] in the “Duel” modes (winner - Belarusian player Nikita “clawz” Marchinsky [13] ) and “Obelisk” (European winner ) collective 2z [14] ). Since Nikita "clawz" Marchinsky played as part of 2z, he became the first player in the games of the Quake series, who became the champion of QuakeCon in both single and team modes.
On August 22, 2017, Quake Champions became available in early access on Steam and through the Bethesda.net application immediately after the completion of closed beta testing. Despite the developers' statement about the free-to-play model, at this stage the game requires the purchase of the Champions Pack [15] .
On August 10, 2018, at QuakeCon 2018, it was announced that the game was free [16] . Only one game character is available for the free-to-play version - the Ranger , the rest are bought for in-game currency , it is also possible to buy the full version of the game at a fixed price with all the champions available for the game, including those that will be released in the future .
Characters
The game has a system for upgrading your account and customizing champions. Each hero has a passive and active ability, the latter can be used once every 20-45 seconds, depending on the champion. The restoration of active ability can be accelerated by selecting special items in the form of an hourglass on the map. Separate passive abilities of champions reflect the mechanics from earlier Quake games and mods , as well as from other arena shooters. For example, Slash can slide in a kneeling position, as was done in Quake 4 , and Clutch can move jerkily, which repeats the trick from Unreal Tournament . Champions also differ in terms of starting and maximum health and armor, maximum speed and size of the hit box (affected area).

Game Modes
The following main modes are available in the game [33] :
- The battle - the mode of "every man for himself," the classic deathmatch ;
- Team battle - team battle to the death;
- Duel - one-on-one tournament. Two players choose three non-repeating champions, followed by a short warm-up, and then the battle itself. The player's goal is to knock out all three of the opponent’s champions, after which he will be awarded the victory in the round;
- Obelisk - command mode. In the center of the arena appears a "soul", which must be captured and brought to its "base", and then held for as long as possible;
- Instant death - deathmatch on railsotrons that kill with one hit.
In addition to these modes, the game has a line of "arcade" modes, which are periodically changed, but in case of special popularity among players have a chance to get into the list of main ones. In addition, it is possible to create a match with your own settings, among which a parameter is available that allows you to disable the active skills of champions.
