Golden Mask - Russian National Theater Award and Festival . The “Golden Mask” was established by the Union of Theater Workers of Russia (STD of the Russian Federation) in 1993 [1] (some sources refer to 1994) [2] [3] at the initiative of People's Artist of the USSR M. A. Ulyanov (chairman of the STD of the Russian Federation in 1986 —1996) and with the participation of his deputy V. G. Urin and playwright V. V. Pavlov .

About Prize
The prize is awarded on a competitive basis once a year according to the results of the past theater season for creative achievements in the field of theater art, and is awarded to performances of all genres of theater art: drama , opera , ballet , operetta and musical , puppet theater [4] .
To determine the applicants for the Golden Mask Prize, an expert council is created from among the leading theater critics, specialists from the Union of Theater Workers and its regional organizations. The composition of the expert council and its chairman are approved by the Secretariat of the STD of the Russian Federation . To determine the winners - laureates from the nominees (by secret ballot according to the results of the festival), two professional juries are created - one for the performances of the drama theater and puppet theaters and the second for the performances of opera, operetta / musical and ballet. The jury may not include creators and performers of performances participating in the festival, as well as members of the expert council [4] .
Laureates and events of the 2008 Golden Mask Festival
The 14th Golden Mask festival was held in Moscow from March 27 to April 15, 2008 [5] . This year, four new nominations were introduced from the contenders for the title “Best Performance of Musical Theaters” - “The best work of the composer”, “The best work of the costume designer”, “The best work of the costume designer” and “The best work of the conductor” (ballet). Competition "novation" changed its name to "experiment". The expert council watched 150 performances. The competition was nominated for 15 drama performances, 11 operas, 9 ballets [6] .
As part of the project “Legendary Performances of the 20th Century”, in March, the play “ Harlequin, the servant of two masters ” “Piccolo Teatro di Milano” ( Italy ) was shown at the Maly Theater . The project “Premieres of the Mariinsky Theater in Moscow” demonstrated the operas “ Electra ” by R. Strauss and “Enuf” by L. Janachek , as well as “One-Act Ballet Evening”. "Premieres of the Alexandrinsky Theater in Moscow" from March 29 to April 12 showed the performances " Living Corpse ", "Ivana", "The Seagull ", "Double", " Marriage ". From April 3 to 8, 2008 the “Russian Case” program was held, on the poster of which the theater critic Marina Davydova worked [5] .
In April 2008, within the framework of the Golden Mask Festival, the PRO-Theater was held at the Central House of Artists - an exhibition that brought together more than 90 participants (theaters, projects and festivals from Russia and the CIS countries, as well as Russian and foreign festivals, companies, operating in the theater infrastructure market). In the framework of PRO-Theater-2008, seminars, round tables, and master classes were held [5] .
2008 Golden Mask Award Nominees
Theater Council critic Irina Kholmogorova became the chairman of the expert council of the Drama and Puppet Theater. The expert council included: Olga Glazunova (head of the Cabinet of Theater for Children and Puppet Theater STD RF), Dina Goder (theater critic), Ekaterina Dmitrievskaya (theater critic), Oleg Loevsky (director of the All-Russian Festival "Real Theater"), Elena Markova ( theater critic), Kristina Matvienko (theater critic), Alla Shenderova (theater critic) [7] .
The opera critic Elena Tretyakova became the chairman of the expert council of the musical theater. The expert council included: Larisa Barykina (musicologist, theater critic), Ekaterina Biryukova (music critic), Anna Galayda (ballet critic), Natalia Zvenigorodskaya (ballet critic), Tatyana Kuzovleva (historian of ballet, critic), Irina Muravyova (music critic ), Sergei Khodnev (music critic) [7] .
The table of nominees is based on the official published list [8] , with a grouping by performances. The table combines in one column the nominations “Best Actress” and “Best Actress” [4] .

2008 Golden Mask Award Winners
The chairman of the jury of the Drama Theater and Puppet Theaters was Alexei Bartoshevich (head of the Department of History of the Foreign Theater of the RATI (GITIS)), the jury included Valery Barinov (actor), Farid Bikchantaev (director), Yuri Halperin (artist), Inga Oboldina (actress) , Anahit Oganesyan (art critic), Elena Kovalskaya (critic), Vladimir Lemeshonok (actor), Viktor Novikov (art director, “The Theater named after V. F. Komissarzhevskaya ”), Elena Solntseva (critic), Leonid Kheifets (director), Victor Shraiman (director), Igor Yasulovich (actor) [9] .
The composer Leonid Desyatnikov chaired the jury of musical theaters, the members of the jury included Viktor Arkhipov (artist), Marina Baghdasaryan (critic), Evgeny Brazhnik (conductor), Gerard Vasiliev (singer), Vadim Gayevsky (critic), Leila Guchmazova (critic), Mikhail Muginshtein (musicologist), Alla Osipenko (ballet dancer), Nina Semizorova (ballet dancer), Alexander Sibirtsev (ballet dancer), Sergey Smirnov (choreographer), Alexey Fomkin (vice-rector for academic affairs at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet ), Irina Yaskevich (critic) [9] .
The Golden Mask Prize Award Ceremony took place on April 15 at the Musical Theater named after K. S. Stanislavsky and Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko [5] . The ceremony was staged by the director of the Helikon-opera Dmitry Bertman , between the announcements of the laureates there was a fashion show of fashion models of Glory Zaitsev .The conference was attended by Dmitry Pevtsov , Sergey Frolov and Evgeny Stychkin , depicting Woland , Koroviev and Fagot [10] [11] .
Сергей Ходнев, корреспондент издания Коммерсант , назвал церемонию «худшим представлением фестиваля» . К нему присоединились Анна Галайда, Олег Зинцов, Петр Поспелов (обозреватели газеты Ведомости ), вдобавок назвав решения жюри «неравноценными: к музыкальному вердикту серьезных вопросов мало, к драматическому — больше» . Удивление и негодование этих критиков вызвало присуждение магнитогорскому спектаклю «Гроза» режиссёра Льва Эренбурга победы в номинации «драматический спектакль малой формы» [12] . Светлана Наборщикова (газета Известия ) написала, что решение жюри в номинации балет, «не то что удивило, а просто ошеломило» . По её мнению основными претендентами на премию были «Корсар» Большого театра и «Чайка» Музыкального театра им. К. С. Станиславского и Вл. И. Немировича-Данченко , которые в итоге не получили ни одной «Золотой маски» [13] . Екатерина Бирюкова ( Коммерсант ) отметила, что «впервые наблюдалась реальная борьба в дирижёрской номинации, и даже не хватало Валерия Гергиева , давно отказавшегося выставлять свою кандидатуру в связи с отсутствием конкурентов» [14] .
