List of nominees and winners of the Golden Mask Award 2009

The prize is awarded on a competitive basis once a year according to the results of the past theater season for creative achievements in the field of theater art, and is awarded to performances of all genres of theater art: drama , opera , ballet , operetta and musical , puppet theater ^[4] .

Two expert councils are created to select performances for competitions - one for performances of the drama theater and puppet theaters, and the second for performances of opera, operetta / musical and ballet. To determine the winners - laureates from the nominees (by secret ballot according to the results of the festival), two professional juries are created - by analogy with expert advice - one for performances of the drama theater and puppet theaters and the second for performances of opera, operetta / musical and ballet. The jury may not include creators and performers of performances participating in the festival, as well as members of the expert council ^[4] .

In Moscow, the 15th Golden Mask festival was held from March 27 to April 17, 2009 ^[5] . For the competition, 49 performances of 41 theaters from 15 cities of Russia were selected. 129 private nominations were announced ^[6] .

The project “Premieres of the Mariinsky Theater in Moscow” showed the opera “The Brothers Karamazov” (February 3 and 4), the ballet “Glass Heart” (February 28) and “Evening of One-Act Ballets”: “Carnival”, “The Prodigal Son”, “Symphony in C Major " (March 1). In the framework of the project “Legendary Performances and Names of the 20th Century”, the performances of “Push” by Silvi Guillem and Russell Malifanta (March 14 and 15), “Last Touch First” by Jiri Kilian (March 27 and 28), “Impressing The Czar” were shown William Forsyth (March 29). From April 9 to 13, the Russian Case program was held for the tenth time, and Elena Kovalskaya worked on the poster. The 4th theater market “PRO-Theater-2009” was held in the Central House of Artists on Krymsky Val , in which theaters, festivals, theater projects from Russia, the CIS countries and Europe took part (seminars, round tables, master classes were held) . The Mask Plus festival was held for the first time, an out-of-competition program of the Golden Mask festival, which included performances from Russia, as well as from the CIS and Baltic countries, selected by experts, but not participating in the main festival program ^[5] .

2009 Golden Mask Award Nominees

The chairman of the expert council of the Drama and Puppet Theater was theater critic Roman Dolzhansky. The expert council included: Alexander Vislov (theater critic), Alexey Goncharenko (theater expert), Oleg Loevsky (director of the All-Russian festival "Real Theater"), Kristina Matvienko (theater critic), Maya Odina (theater critic), Gleb Sitkovsky (theater critic ), Eugene Tropp (theater critic, theater critic) ^[7] .

The opera critic Elena Tretyakova became the chairman of the expert council of the musical theater. The expert council included: Dmitry Abaulin (music critic, ballet critic), Ekaterina Biryukova (music critic), Natalia Zvenigorodskaya (ballet critic), Natalya Kuryumova (ballet critic), Ilya Kukharenko (music critic), Yaroslav Sedov (ballet critic) , Dmitry Tsilikin (music critic) ^[7] .

The table of nominees is based on the official published list ^[8] , with a grouping by performances. The regulations on the prize and the Golden Mask festival do not regulate the maximum number of nominees in one nomination. Each expert council independently determines the nominees of the respective competitions, but must select at least two nominees for any prize in the nomination, which ensures compliance with the competitive basis for the competition and award. Expert councils have the right to decide on the absence of award nominees in any nomination. The table combines in one column the nominations “Best Actress” and “Best Actress” ^[4] .

2009 Golden Mask Award Winners

The chairman of the jury of the Drama Theater and Puppet Theaters was a theater expert, rector of the Higher Theater School. M.S.Schepkina Boris Lyubimov , the jury included Vladimir Biryukov (director), Dina Goder (critic), Marina Zayonts (critic), Larisa Lomakina (artist), Evgeny Marcelli (director), Oksana Mysina (actress), Nikolai Pesochinsky (critic), Alla Pokrovskaya (actress), Kamil Tukaev (actor), Khurmatulla Utyashev (actor), Ilya Epelbaum (director) ^[9] .

The musical theater’s jury was chaired by the artistic director of the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic Society Alexander Tchaikovsky , the jury included Dmitry Belov (director), Albert Galichanin (ballet dancer), Olga Gerdt (critic), Alexey Goribol (composer), Maxim Dunaevsky (composer), Alexander Kolesnikov (critic), Yuri Kochnev (conductor), Tatyana Kuindzhi (singer), Tatyana Kuzovleva (critic), Igor Nezhny (artist), Marina Nestieva (musicologist), Gulyara Sadykh-Zade (critic), Alla Sigalova (choreographer) ^{[9 ]} .

The award ceremony and the gala evening in honor of the anniversary of the festival took place on April 18 at the stage of the Musical Theater named after K. S. Stanislavsky and Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko ^[5] . The directors of the ceremony were Andrey Moguchy and Dmitry Krymov . Composer Alexander Manotskov was responsible for the musical accompaniment. The role of the leader was made by Anatoly Smelyansky . In ballet nominations, Maya Plisetskaya presented awards, “Golden Masks” in the opera - Svyatoslav Belza , in other nominations - Rezo Gabriadze , Konstantin Raikin , Ulyana Lopatkina ^{[10] [11] [12]} .

In general, the results of the festival and the results of the awards did not meet with a negative assessment in the press. Critics noted the vastness of the out-of-competition program of the anniversary festival, while noting the "modest achievements" of competitive performances ^{[12] [13]} . The discussion triggered the award of the Golden Mask to the performance of the director Vladimir Zolotory - Wojcieck of the Altai Regional Drama Theater ( Barnaul ). Local authorities considered the performance immoral and banned, forcing the director to leave the theater, which gave rise to call the Golden Mask " the boldest festival of the country" ^{[10] [14]} . In the competition of ballet performances, Diana Vishneva acted as the undisputed leader. She and her project received three Golden Masks at once, which caused the approval of critics. The newspaper Vedomosti called the decisions of the jury "the most flawless refereeing for many years" ^[15] .

The table of laureates is compiled on the basis of the provisions on the prize (dated May 20, 2008) ^[4] and the official published list of laureates ^[16] .
