About Prize
The prize is awarded on a competitive basis once a year according to the results of the past theater season for creative achievements in the field of theater art, and is awarded to performances of all genres of theater art: drama , opera , ballet , operetta and musical , puppet theater [4] .
Two expert councils are created to select performances for competitions - one for performances of the drama theater and puppet theaters, and the second for performances of opera, operetta / musical and ballet. To determine the winners - laureates from the nominees (by secret ballot according to the results of the festival), two professional juries are created - by analogy with expert advice - one for performances of the drama theater and puppet theaters and the second for performances of opera, operetta / musical and ballet. The jury may not include creators and performers of performances participating in the festival, as well as members of the expert council [4] .
Laureates and Events of the 2012 Golden Mask Festival
In Moscow, the 18th Golden Mask festival was held from March 27 to April 15, 2012. To determine the nominees, the experts watched 563 performances, nominated 18 dramatic and 3 puppet shows, 11 operas, 11 ballets, 3 operettas, 2 modern dance performances and 4 works from the “experiment” category [5] [6] . According to critics, it was difficult to choose the best from the performances presented at the festival this year - most of the nominees are high-level performances. The performance of the Kirov Theater “The Visible Side of Life” was withdrawn from the nomination because it was unable to participate in the festival (the leading role went on maternity leave), and the jury did not leave for Kirov to watch it in advance [7] [8] [9 ] ] .
In February and April 2012, the project “Premieres of the Mariinsky Theater in Moscow” was held, the program of which included the opera “ Dead Souls ”, the ballets “Park” and “One-Act Ballet Evening”. In early April 2012, the project " Mikhailovsky Theater in Moscow" was first presented. The program "Legendary Performances and Names" presented the performances of Christian Lupa "Person. The body of Simone ”and“ Person. Marilyn. " One of the important sections of the Mask Plus this year was the New Play program, dedicated to contemporary drama , as well as the Edinburgh Fringe project in Moscow. Continuation ". For the first time this project was carried out by the Golden Mask and the British Council in 2009. From April 5 to 10, the Russian Case program was held, the poster of which was prepared by Elena Kovalskaya [10] .
In 2012, the festivals “The best performances in the cities of Russia and the Baltic countries” were held in Voronezh , Perm , Khabarovsk , Cherepovets , Novosibirsk , Latvia , Estonia , as well as in Belarus [10] .
2012 Golden Mask Award Nominees
The table of nominees is based on the official published list [11] [12] , with a grouping by performances. The regulations on the prize and the Golden Mask festival do not regulate the maximum number of nominees in one nomination. Each expert council independently determines the nominees of the respective competitions, but must select at least two nominees for any prize in the nomination, which ensures compliance with the competitive basis for the competition and award. Expert councils have the right to decide on the absence of award nominees in any nomination. The table combines in one column the nominations “Best Actress” and “Best Actress” [4] .

2012 Golden Mask Award Winners
The director of the jury of drama theater and puppet theaters was director Rimas Tuminas , the jury members included Anna Viktorova (director and artist), Marina Davydova (critic), Elena Kovalskaya (critic), Andrey Kuzichev (actor), Irina Maksimkina (actress), Zinovy Margolin (artist), Alexey Oorzhak (director), Alexey Pesegov (director), Nikolai Pesochinsky (critic), Alla Pokrovskaya (actress), Vladimir Speshkov (critic) [13] .
The chairman of the jury of musical theaters was Karina Melik-Pashaeva (musicologist), the jury included Andrejs Zhagars (director), Andrei Antonov (singer), Yuri Burlaka (choreographer), Gerard Vasilyev (singer), Maria Vinenkova (singer), Olga Gerdt ( critic), Tatyana Gordeeva (choreographer), Natalya Zavarzina (singer), Natalya Zvenigorodskaya (critic), Mikhail Kislyarov (director), Vladimir Kobekin (composer), Olga Manulkina (critic), Igor Nezhny (artist), Andrei Petrov (choreographer) , Valery Platonov (conductor) [13] .
The award ceremony took place on April 16 at the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theater [6] . The award was directed by Nina Chusova . The ceremony was hosted by the ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina , the soloist of the Mariinsky Theater Ildar Abdrazakov , and they performed it “compactly, stylishly and swiftly” , only occasionally interrupting musical breaks [8] . The first of the evening’s surprises was that in the competition of performances “operetta / musical” not a single prize was awarded in all five categories, which happened for the first time in the history of the festival [14] . The newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets called this event "the humiliation of artists" [15] . Artist Oleg Kulik , presenting the prize in the Experiment nomination, said from the stage that he would propose Pussy Riot as a nominee in the musical, which caused an ambiguous reaction in the hall [16] . The second surprise was the rewarding of the performance “Fuckers” directed by Kirill Serebrennikov - in his speech from the stage he thanked the jury for support and said that he wanted to share the award with those “who are fighting for justice in Russia now: they are doing it in the squares , sitting for it” in prison, who are starving for her ... ” [17] . The final part of the ceremony was the performance of a fragment from Tchaikovsky ’s overture “ 1812 ” - the choral theme of the hymn “ God Save the Tsar ”, which came as a complete surprise to guests and prize winners [18] . All these four fragments, including part of Serebrennikov’s speech, were deleted from the television broadcast of TC Culture , which gave occasion to some media to say that “The Golden Mask suffered from censorship” [19] [20] [15] .
The table of laureates is compiled on the basis of the provisions on the prize (dated May 20, 2008) [4] and the official published list of laureates [21] .
