Synthwave

Synthwave ( Eng. Synthwave ), also known as Retrovave ( Eng. Retrowave ), Futuresynth or Outrun (in honor of the aesthetics of the eponymous game ) [1] - a style of electronic music that appeared in the mid -2000s [2] [3] [ 4] . The genre is based on the use of synthesizers , imitation of the music of the 1980s with the addition of new technologies and an attempt to reproduce the atmosphere of films and video games of that era. Synthwave reached its peak and popularity in the 2010s, in the wake of nostalgia and increased interest in cyberpunk and the 1980s.

Style

From a musical point of view, synthwave is inspired by the new wave , as well as the soundtracks of many films, video games and television shows of the 1980s [5] [6] [7] . As a source of inspiration, such composers as John Carpenter and Wangelis , the group Tangerine Dream [2] [8], are mentioned. This style is predominantly instrumental and uses the characteristic elements of electronic music of the 1980s, electronic drums , “ gated reverb ”, Melodies and bass parts played on analog synthesizers . Everything is done to achieve similarities with electronic music of those years [8] . Despite this, synthwave producers use modern electronic music production techniques and usually bring the bass drum and bass part to the forefront, which is typical of modern electronic music (for example, electro house ).

From an aesthetic point of view, synthwave immerses the listener in a retro-futuristic world, recreating the spirit of science fiction , action films, horror films and futuristic racing games of the 1980s [9] . He is especially close with cyberpunk . Synthwave expresses nostalgia for the culture of the 1980s, trying to capture the atmosphere of those years and immerse it [6] [10] [11] . Video clips and album covers in this genre are often made in the style of pixel art , anime or old science fiction films. Groups that mimic the soundtracks of horror movies of the 1980s are also sometimes called “horror synth” or “carpentercor” (after the director and composer John Carpenter , who wrote the soundtracks for his films) [12] .
